Japan's used camera market is unmatched: clean, well-kept equipment at prices that make importing worthwhile. The catch is that optics punish rough handling more than almost any other category.
What to check before you buy
- Fungus, haze and balsam separation in the glass, which are invisible in a casual photo but fatal to image quality.
- Shutter count and mechanical wear on digital bodies.
- Oil on the aperture blades, which causes sticking and slow response.
- Battery condition, and whether the charger matches the voltage in your country.
- Completeness: caps, hoods, straps and the original box all affect resale value.

Packing optics so they arrive clean
A lens is a precision instrument suspended inside a tube. It needs to be immobilised, cushioned and protected from moisture all at once. Wrap the lens in a soft cloth, place it in a padded pouch and surround it with closed-cell foam inside a rigid box.
Never ship a camera body with the lens attached, and always remove the battery where the carrier allows it.
Choosing the delivery method
- Single bodies and lenses — EMS or an express courier, with insurance.
- Older medium-format systems and heavy optic sets — consolidated freight, palletised and fully documented.
- Accessories and small parts — consolidate them with the camera so that one shipment and one customs entry cover everything.
Customs and value
Photographic equipment is a category customs officers know well, so the description has to be precise: brand, model, serial number, condition and value. Where a camera is being returned to you after repair, say so on the documentation so that it is not treated as a new import.
Buying with confidence from abroad
The practical advantage of a partner in Japan is that equipment is checked, described and photographed in the country of origin while the seller is still reachable. A fault found in Kobe costs one email; a fault found after a flight halfway around the world costs a return shipment and a lost sale.
